Clachaig Blog - Summer 2006

2nd September 2006
Ben Race Day. Yes, the day when 380 men and women of unsound mind decide to run the 4406ft up and the 4406ft all the way back down Britain's highest peak. And if the mountain itself wasn't enough of a challenge, there's always the mile out and mile back on the tarmac from the start at Fort William's Claggan Park.

Amongst the many competitors of unsound mind was our very own director, pictured here after crossing the finish line. When he said that he'd be tackling the Three Sisters straight after the Ben we had thought he meant the hills in Glencoe. Whilst we did think this was a bit ambitious, we quickly realised our mistake when it turned out to be a bottle of Three Sisters, courtesy of the Atlas Brewery, Kinlochleven.

Check out the Ben Nevis Race web site for full results and your entry form for 2007 if you fancy your chances of beating the men's record of 1hr 25 mins which has stood since 1984!

After 6 months of flogging raffle tickets and generally intimidating our customers and getting them to part with their cash, we're really pleased to announce that we have now reached our fund raising target for the Community Poly-Tunnel Project. The grand total raised is now £1012.12 and this has been passed on to the Community Council to help realise this local 'green' project (see below for details.)

A huge thanks to all those who have filled our buckets with their coppers. Standby for more news on our next £1000 fund raising target for another local good cause.

Beer drinking at Clachaig is nothing if not an education. And thanks to the Williams Bros. we can now offer a t-shirt if you prove to be Top of the Hops! Each of their 4 'hop quiz' beers is made to the same recipe with the important exception of the hops.

So if you know your Syrian Gold from your Bramling Cross, enter the Hop Quiz and win a highly desirable limited edition t-shirt. 'Owz about that then, hop pickers! (with apologies to our famous neighbour in the glen).

Described as simply the best guide to the best Scotland has to offer, we're quite pleased to note that Clachaig appears in the listings on more than one occasion.

You'll find us noted under Best Countryside Inns, Bloody Good Pubs (with a tick for being amongst the best of type in Scotland) and Best Malt Selections (with 2 ticks for being among the best of type in the UK). We're also listed under Best of Skiing, noting our proximity to Scotland's longest established ski area at White Corries.

In a recent poll in which over 50,000 votes were cast, Glencoe was named as one of the 7 wonders of Scotland. So between Clachaig and the glen, hopefully we've got quite a bit to offer!

Always nice to hear that our efforts haven't gone unnoticed. Especially encouraging therefore, to open the mail today and find that Rough Guides - those publishers with a reputation for good writing, accuracy and honesty, have given Clachaig a rare 'special recommendation' in the Rough Guide to Scotland (published April 2006). With many places listed, only a few qualify for a special recommendation, highlighting Clachaig as one of the authors' favourites.

So, thanks very much Rough Guides. We kind of like you, too.

Seems that since his Hut was taken down again after filming Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban, poor old Hagrid has been at a bit of a loose end. We were pleased, therefore, to be able to offer the man-mountain a job as bar man at Clachaig.

However, we regret that we had to let him go as he didn't leave enough room behind the bar for anybody else (though we didn't have any problem getting the bar cleared after closing!). No, not true. But "Hogrid" as he is known did keep the crowds amused on Saturday night and can, incidentally, be booked for your very own Harry Potter party.
