As this old photograph of Clachaig Hotel demonstrates, photographers have been visiting Glencoe for many years. It is usually the mountains and the magnificent views which catch the eye. However, the rate of change on the mountains is very slow and it is the pictures of places and people which are of more interest. Even then, the rate of change and the pace of development is much slower here in the Highlands than elsewhere in the country.
Collating and sorting through the many photographs and publications relating to the Glencoe area is a huge task. However, it is felt that these images should be seen and a record kept of how the area has changed through the years. These pictures are presented for your enjoyment on the following pages. More images will be added in due course, as we sort through the collection.
Circa 1935 Photo Gallery
This series of photographs has been obtained by digitally scanning the original glass plates. The original images are believed to have been taken around 1935, possibly in preparation for the sale of Lord Strathcona’s Glencoe estate, as they clearly show the various buildings sold off at that time.
